If you are just starting out making beats, and you aspire to become a rap artist (or similar), then getting a beat generator is a great idea. It is a very easy way to start creating some beats, and it is quite inexpensive. Beat generator software will usually consist of a sequencer, a drum set and a keyboard, and usually lots of cool instrumentals and tunes for you to use. Of course, software can never really replace the right equipment, but it is a great way to start producing beats.
The greatest thing about using beat maker software first is that you can make it in your own tempo. If you are not that confident in your producer skills, why not use some cheap software to see if you are any good? I know you can do it, but sometimes you just need to convince yourself that you can do it.
Some technical stuff: beat maker software enables you to export your music directly to mp3 files. Then you can burn it onto a CD, and use it privately. Or how about showing it to a producer? •    A desktop software. Avoid online versions, as this may cause connection problems.
•    Can export to 44.1 stereo quality
•    Sequencer, drumkit, keyboard and loads of samples to get you started with.
On the price side, it is not NEAR as expensive, as you would think. You can get a high quality beat generator for just 40$ or so, or at least under 100$. If you dare taking a chance today, you can be DJ tomorrow.
